Healthy City Website - There is nothing more important to a city then the health and wellbeing of it citizens. Sunderland aims to be a prosperous city – a desirable safe and healthy place to live, work, learn and visit, where all people can reach their full potential. Sunderland’s healthy City initiative was progressed further in 2003 when the City was designated World Health Organisation (WHO).

Phase V (2009– 2013)
The overarching goal of Phase V will be Health and Health Equity in all local Policies. Health will become a core value in city policies and precondition for development. Cities will sytematically address the health impacts of policies and strategies as well as health inequalities, socila inclusion and the needs of disadvantaged and vulnerable groups.
Phase V also has three core themes
- Creating caring and Supportive Environments - A healthy city should be above all a city for all its citizens, inclusive, support, sensitive and responsive to their diverse needs and expectations.
- Healthy Living - A healthy city provides conditions and opportunities supportive of healthy lifestyles.
- Health urban environment and design - A healthy city offers a physical and build environment that supports health, recreation and wellbeing, safety, social interaction, easy mobility, a sense of pride and cultural identity and which is accessible and responsive to the needs of all its citizens.
